Early '90s KKB Trip

Let's meet at 7am

The plan was for all of us to meet up at TNB by 7am and then journey on from there. I woke up at 7am. Well, we're following Malaysian time, so it's ok. Having showered, dressed and packed the necessary stuff (like towel and extra T-shirt), I wore my slippers and drove to TNB (don't use shoes - 'cos it'll get wet when you river cross, so slippers are a lot better; however get the slippers with straps, which I didn't...). I arrived at 7.30am and of course, everyone was there waiting for me: Anussa, Tesy, Rizal, James and Julie. So, we took two cars and off we went.
It was also James' birthday and Tes had bought a cake for him. Anush told us that when she and Tesy was driving to TNB, Anush asked Tesy what cake she bought for James. Tesy then only remembered she had left the cake in the fridge! According to Anush, Tesy had actually marked off the cake in her checklist! So, they had to drive back to take the cake.

Canai for calories, cake for celebrities

The drive to Kuala Kubu Baru took about an hour, and after we parked our cars, we had our breakfast at the Indian restaurant. Everyone had the standard roticanai and nasi lemak, but Anush had to have her Uncle Toby's energy yoghurt bar. The highlight was when Tesy took out the cake and presented it to James. He was pleasantly surprised and embarrased at the same time (being in a mamak shop and all). Of course, we had to remind him of our wackoness, so we sang "Happy Birthday" aloud to him, which drew some attention to the usually quiet patrons of this shop. James, who is working in NTV7, is our only celebrity, as he failed to bring along Joanna Bessy and Norazlina Awang.

Trekking and stream crossing

After brekkie, we headed in one car, where James directed us to the starting point of the trek. After ditching the car beside the road, we began our journey into the woods. The time was about 10am. Everyone was in good spirits, and even the shrill of the monkeys didn't scare us. Soon we reached a stream, which we had to cross. The water was cold, but the first crossing was very shallow, about shin deep.
Anush now realised that wearing black leather shoes with a 3/4" heel was innappropriate for this task. Finally, after three stream crossings, she couldn't take it any more, so she got James to throw it to the other side of the stream, only to figure out that it was too deep to cross the stream there (this being neck-level or more deep). Plus the water currents were pretty strong too. So, we had to backtrack a little (see, Anush always takes us to a dead end), cross the stream and then find a way to fetch those darn shoes of hers. Well, since James threw it, James had to retrieve it back, which he did, amazingly. So, the hike continued until we reached the waterfalls.

Splash at the waterfalls

What a beautiful sight! It was worth the one hour plus that took us to get here. We climbed a rock platform and stationed ourselves in front of the waterfall, embracing the fine mist that caressed our exposed skin. The waterfall was ten storeys high (or more), and it created a pool the length of two badminton courts which we could dip ourselves into. Everyone was so happy that we achieved our main target. We passed around some oranges while I gobbled up the 'Pringles'. I then braved myself into the pool, which was pretty chilly but bearable, and splashed around for a bit, and soon the rest of the gang followed suit.

Uno champion

We had the place to ourselves until a bunch of teenagers arrived. So, after a short while, we got back onto the "rock" and started playing Uno, the card game made popular by Anussa. James won the first game, out of beginner's luck, but in the later games, Julie's fast 'intercept' techniques got James to draw sixteen (16) cards! Rizal, as always, preferred to isolate himself in some corner of the "rock", while Anush showed us some of her advanced movements. Of course, the last game, where it counted most, was won by the one and only, true champion of Uno - me!! I made sure the whole of KKB heard the result.

Leech attack

At 1pm, we decided to return to KKB. So we left the area and backtracked our way across the streams and woods, seeing a few day-trippers along the way. Now, what would a trip into the Malaysian tropical woods be without leeches? Well, the first one was spotted by Anush on the back of Julie's thigh. James easily removed it by applying the fire of a cigarette lighter to the creature. Fifteen minutes later, I discovered a longer but flatter leech attached just below my left knee. This prompted James to apply the same fiery technique. But this one was a real mothersucker! The fire didn't make it budge! (It had it's mouth lodged on one end, while it's tail was hooked into my flesh at the other end). James and I couldn't believe it. He tried for one or two minutes trying to burn it free, but what he managed to burn was the hair on my legs. Finally, the gang ascertained that we just yank it out with a swiss knife, which James did, then stabbed and roasted it on the ground.
We got to Rizal's car by 2:30pm, and on our way back, stopped by Hacienda Tea Garden (I think that's what it's called) for a short while, and once in KKB town, we took our rest and lunch at the same roticanai joint. I had tasty nasi goreng while the rest had rojak. Well, it started drizzling, and that was our queue to go home. I sent James and Julie back, and touched base at just after 5pm. Would you believe, my leech cut was still bleeding! Talk about anti-clotting agent or wot.
